| After completing my internship at Groote Schuur
Hospital (venue of the first heart transplant), I travelled abroad,
doing locum work in the UK for a period, before joining P&O/
Princess Cruises as ships doctor aboard luxury liners.
On returning to Cape Town, I commenced training in general surgery
at Groote Schuur Hospital after which I completed a 4 year residency
in Plastic Surgery. After passing my Specialist Board Examination
in Plastic Surgery (first attempt), I remained on as consultant
plastic surgeon at Groote Schuur Hospital, before moving into
private practice, at City Park Hospital (since renamed the Christiaan
Barnard Memorial Hospital) - a large private hospital in the central
business district of Cape Town.
Today, I remain actively involved in the Dept. of Plastic Surgery
at Cape Town University, through my attachment to the Red Cross
Childrens’ Hospital Cleft Palate Unit, where I perform surgery
on these children, whilst teaching registrars (trainee plastic
surgeons) the necessary skills.
I am registered with or affiliated to the following professional
bodies:
- Registered as a specialist plastic and reconstructive surgeon with the Health Professions Council
of South Africa
- Full member of the Association of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons of South Africa
- Member of the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons
- Fellow of the College of Surgeons of South Africa in Plastic Surgery
- Fellow of the Royal college of Surgeons in Glasgow
- Registered with the General Medical Council in the UK
In addition, I have successfully completed the
American Federal Licensing Examination in New
York (FLEX). I travel to the USA almost annually to attend congresses,
and to visit and learn from some of the world leaders in the field
of Plastic Surgery, and have been privileged to spend time with
Drs John Reinisch, Rollin Daniel, Ian Jackson, and Rod Rohrich,
to name a few.
My private practice comprises of about 90% cosmetic surgery and
encompasses the full spectrum of cosmetic surgery, including breast
augmentation, breast reduction and lift,
body contouring, tummy tucks, liposuction,
facelifts etc. I have a special interest
in rhinoplasty surgery (nose jobs), and
labial reduction / labiaplasty.
I also perform many "non-surgical" procedures - Restylane
lip enhancement and Botox being the
most common.
Scientific Publications:
I have published several articles in international, peer-reviewed
Plastic Surgery journals, notably Plastic
& Reconstructive Surgery, and Annals
of Plastic Surgery - probably regarded as the two leading
plastic surgery journals in the world today.
